Stay Safe- What To Do In The Event Of An Intruder Breaking And Entering

Home intrusion is something that all of us hope to never encounter. Unfortunately, not everyone is lucky enough to avoid an intruder breaking and entering. There are a few things you can do to try to prevent a home invasion like maintaining a well-lit lawn. You can also go a step further and install a home security system to help you stay safe. Placing the home security sign on the front lawn will deter a home intruder too, but you will need more to stay safe in the event of intrusion, you will need a plan. Here are a few simple ways to prepare for the worst.

DO NOT Confront A Home Intruder

Rule number one for encountering people who pose a threat- do not confront them. A person who walks into a home where they do not know anything about what is happening inside is not someone you want to encounter.

This type of person is likely dangerous and the priority in this scary situation is keeping yourself and other people in the house safe. Protect you and your family at all costs. When you detect a break-in, it is always better to err on the side of safety.  You do not know if it is one or more intruders, or if they are armed.

Call For Help

This is not the time to act tough or minimize the situation. If an intruder enters your house and does not have permission or reason to be there, then that person is a threat to you and your family.

Call the police if you are able to do so without the intruder hearing you. In some places in North Central Texas, you can text 9-1-1. If this service is available in your area, stay hidden and quiet while you text for help. For more information on how to know if your area is eligible for this texting function, the Federal Communications Commission will tell you more about the service.

Leave or Hide

In the event of intruder breaking and entering your home, you have two main options. Both are going to help keep you safe, but it is up to you to evaluate your unique situation and decide what the best course of action is.

Option 1, leave as quickly and quietly as possible. This takes a bit of planning. It is hard to plan an evacuation route in the case of something like a fire or invasion, but it is important to plan now before it happens to you. Though it is difficult to imagine something like this happening to you, it is better to prepare with a just-in-case mentality. You want a quick and direct escape route. Look for exits that don’t require you to leave the room you are in, perhaps a door leading to the outside of that room or a low window.

Option 2, stay quiet and stay hidden. If you can’t escape, hide. Maybe the home intruder is standing in the way of your escape. Maybe you aren’t able to detect where the intruder is at all, or maybe you have family you can’t get to and can’t leave without them. Whatever the situation is, stay quiet and stay hidden. Alert the other household members if you are able to and make sure they also stay quiet and hidden.
